BASEBALL BOOSTER'S
PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION
Long Awaited
Cougar Baseball Facility Nears The Finish Line

The new Lakeville South facility is valued at
$47,000 when completed.
The long awaited
Cougar Baseball Boosters press box facility is in the final
legs of completion. After over three years of planning and
setbacks, and one year of building, the project is moving into the final phase. With the
help of 30 very benevolent businesses the boosters have been
blessed with invaluable and generous donations, as well as
great support in bringing this much needed project to fruition
for the Lakeville South baseball program.
Left to complete
as the project winds down:
- Finish first
floor tile grouting
- Press box interior
ceiling
trim work
-
Press box furniture
The project was to be
finished in winter. A request was made by the school
in January asking if all work could wait until the spring melt due to the plowing issues in opening the
road. The alumni boosters were forced to abide by the school's wishes.
The road to the project is not part of their normal duties and
the school couldn't plow it.
Unfortunately Spring is the
start of the busy season for contractors, so this in effect
caused major scheduling issues for the project's completion. The boosters
have now had to patiently wait for contractor availability in
a horrible economy. We
are deeply sorry if this has been perceived as an
inconvenience for those waiting to use the new facility. We
sincerely hope that parents would understand. It is a
volunteer effort of professionals and they are committed to
giving the school the best possible work for free.
The facility will open as soon as all work is completed to
city and state health code.
This project
was made entirely possible by volunteer contractors in
a historic down economy. The boosters
thank all of our wonderful donators and supporters for their
tremendous help and partnership in this project. Thank you for
sticking with us and for honoring your invaluable
contributions, despite the economic hardship for all. These
companies all have their hearts in the right place and should
be forever recognized for their contribution to LSHS and the
South baseball program.

One of the awaited new pieces for the baseball press box
facility is the addition of a fabulous new sign to adorn the
building and also commemorate the beginning of South Cougar
Baseball and its first season in 2006. Dan Gust of ActionPlus Signs in Apple Valley has been kind enough to
donate his time and services to produce a sign designed by the
alumni baseball boosters which will hang on the North face of
the press box and be visible to all who come to the field.
Dan is an outstanding guy and was truly great to work with. He
is another of the many fine outstanding businessman who

DAY 55: PRESS BOX CARPETING
INSTALLED
Hertaus
Floors Come Through For South Cougar Baseball

The press box carpet looks
absolutely great in cardinal red.
The press box flooring
is officially completed and looks beautiful. Ron Hertaus of
Hertaus Floors stopped in bright and early on Thursday morning
and did the entire floor on his own. The floor was covered in
a durable indoor-outdoor carpet in cardinal red with flecks of
black so as to hold up better and not show dirt. The carpet
also adds an acoustic dampening to the room to alleviate echo
and give it a much fuller sound for announcing and for the
occasional radio broadcasts that will take place there. The
Cougar alumni boosters thank Ron and Lisa Hertaus very much
for their wonderful contribution to our project.
If you are in need of
carpet for your home or business, please give the folks at
Hertaus Floors a call for great prices and the best
professional installation. Call 952-469-5123. Thank you

DAY 54: CONCESSION STAND TRIM IS
COMPLETE
Boosters Go Above
And Beyond To Help LSBA With 4-Team Qualifier
Even though the
alumni boosters have taken much undeserved heat from LSBA over
a project that many of their members have been openly critical
of, the alumni boosters worked their tails off, many nights
past midnight, in order for the facility to be open ahead of
schedule for a 4-team qualifier. The boosters did their utmost
best to accommodate the event in the hopes of helping
facilitate a successful fundraising effort for LSBA.
The new facility
is now nearing completion after a major January setback. (see
story above) It is hoped that with the proper care, the
facility will serve Cougar baseball well for the next 40 to 50
years. Thank you to all who openly supported our efforts!

OP/ED: A STORY FOR LSBA, "THE
LITTLE RED HEN"
Summer Baseball
Group Was Impatient, Unduly Critical of Project Delay
The alumni Cougar Baseball
Boosters would be reticent, if not remiss in failing to set the
record straight over unnecessary pitfalls incurred during
their long planned four-year project to bring a much needed
revenue mechanism to Cougar baseball.
Due to a request from the
school to wait and finish the project in the spring, the
slated January finish of the project was delayed. The alumni
boosters had hoped to finish during the contractors slow
season, however, issues in continually plowing the road to the
project forced the school to request that all construction be
delayed "until the spring melt." The boosters were not
thrilled, but understood the school's plight and respectfully
acquiesced to their request, even though spring would not only
be the start of the baseball season, but also the contractors'
busy season. The boosters understood the school's position,
but sadly that same courtesy was not extended in kind to the alumni
boosters, from others not directly affiliated with the school.
Much pressure was unfairly levied to open the facility before
contractors could even finish their work.
Even though they
had nothing to do with offering the school this free new
facility, LSBA, a summer baseball organization, was openly
critical of the delay, even though it was no fault of the
alumni boosters. Some in LSBA were highly critical of key
figures who were responsible for the genesis and orchestration
of the project. This was discouraging to many boosters who
worked tirelessly in good faith (and poor health) to
bring this needed revenue tool to South Cougar baseball.
Due to the
impatience and unwarranted pressure of many in LSBA to open
the facility before contractors could finish their work
properly, the structure is now short some essential key
amenities. The boosters are earnestly working hard to alleviate the
issue and seek alternative solutions to get back these planned
for, yet now missing, necessary components.
It is truly
regretful that those delivering the criticism failed to understand the issues surrounding the
project delay,
and that they could not wait patiently for the final contracted work to be
completed. The impatience of LSBA was without a doubt a
negative influence and an undeniable hindrance to the
project.
What many in LSBA
failed to realize through their impassioned vitriol and behind
the scenes rancor is that this has never been their project,
nor will it ever be under their ownership. The fact is that
all donations and the contracted
professional help for this project were
brokered by the alumni Cougar Baseball Boosters through web
advertising on this website, which is paid solely by private money,
none of which has ever come from the school, nor district 194, and certainly
none ever from LSBA.
The alumni
boosters have worked very diligently on their own, in many instances paying from their own pockets
to finish as planned, all due to a
key boosters Applebees pancake breakfast fundraiser that was myopically
cancelled by others for no good reason, shorting the project
$1,200. With their long range goal still in mind, the alumni boosters have
persevered, despite these shortcomings, to finish what their group set out to do,
which was to give Cougar baseball a valued
revenue mechanism, as well as one of, if not the finest press
box facilities in the state.
The alumni
boosters thank those who have openly supported our efforts,
giving our sincerest thanks to all of the Cougar baseball families
from the classes of 2005 through 2009, all who helped support the
group's fundraising quest to build the much needed facility.
The boosters also want to thank District 194, particularly
Stan Fredrickson, for the gratitude and understanding extended
throughout this endeavor. It has been very much appreciated.
Last, but
certainly not least, the alumni boosters are most indebted
to the 31 kind-hearted businesses who all agreed to freely
donate and help build this beautiful new facility, all during
arguably the worst economy in recorded history. The boosters
thank each of these wonderful businesses from the utmost
bottom of our hearts. We greatly appreciate the outstanding
support. South baseball is much better off as a result of
their tremendous generosity. We sincerely thank all of you
very much!

A
lesson generally learned in grade school for most.
Unlike the story ending of the
little red hen who got to keep the fruits of her labor all to
herself, the alumni boosters fully
intend to turn this facility over to LSHS and the new Al
Iverson baseball program. We certainly do hope that those
in LSBA who were staunchly voicing their cynicism, while not
helping in the least, would learn from their unwarranted
and unnecessary criticism, especially when it comes to altruistic efforts from others
outside their summer baseball group. Egos aside, it's
all about building a great Cougar baseball program and giving
South players the absolute very best that we can afford.

DAY 53: LOWER RAILING FINISHED;
PILLARS WRAPPED
Concession
Stand Railing Is Complete And Stair Pillars Are Upgraded
Another step closer
to completion. The lower concession stand railing has finally
been built and is in place. Rather than wait for contractors
to make it back to finish, the boosters have stepped up to
finish portions of the project on their own. The lower railing
serves one primary function, as a overly excessive door-stop.
The winds often blow hard at the South baseball fields and
pull quite hard on the door when it is open. A door return was
deemed not acceptable as the wind would have literally pulled
it from the door or severely damaged it as a result of the
strong wind force. So a simple railing was built to act as a
doorstop, while also adding an aesthetic quality and matching
look with the existing stair railing.

A concession door railing was
constructed to act as a door-stop in heavy wind.
The 6x6 support
posts for the upper press box landing were not the best
looking, with large chunks missing and gouges in them, so they
were wrapped in cedar for a beautiful finished look that
upgrades their appearance tremendously.

The 6x6 green treated pillars have
been wrapped with a nice cedar casing.

DAY 52: SOUND SYSTEM INSTALLED IN
PRESS BOX
PA System Amp
Much More Powerful Than Previous System; Music Rocks
The sound system for
the new facility is a definite upgrade from the old portable
amp used for the first five years. A 150w per channel powered
mixer has been installed that will give fans a better audio
experience while attending games. The music is louder and can
be heard everywhere in the ballpark. The PA setup will also be
more robust as a result giving a loud and clear address system
for Cougar games.

With 150w per channel, the press
box sound system is ready to rock. |

DAY 51: INTERIOR PAINTING IS
COMPLETED
Cougar Colors
Provide Color Splash For Press Box / Concession Stand
With the painting
crew pulling out after the school's request to delay the
project during the winter, the boosters had to finish the job
on their own. At long last that portion of the project is now
completed. The interior colors are cardinal red on the east
and west walls, with the north and south walls being Vegas
gold. The ceiling is also gold to give it the lighter color.
The upper and lower floors need to be finished, as well as the
fancy trim work for the baseboards, windows and doors. The
boosters have had to be patient in waiting for the
professionals to free up time to get back into the facility.
With their work being voluntarily donated, the boosters
understand the contractor's need to take care of paying
business first in this historic down economy.

Concession stand painting is
finished. The east and south walls are shown.

DAY 50: COUNTERTOP INSTALLATION
IS FINISHED
Hoffman's
Countertops Comes Through For Lakeville South Baseball

(L-R) Pat Thompson, Derek
Pfannenstein and Andy McKinley.
The countertops
are officially in and look beautiful. Jeff Hoffman and his
crew stopped in on Wednesday for the installation work. They
were quick and extremely efficient in getting the job done
right, with professional craftsmanship. The first step was to pre-measure the
walls the week before, using a state of the art laser to note every nook and
cranny of the sheetrock. Then it was off to the shop for a custom
cut using their computer aided cutting machine. On Wednesday
it was time to install. The end result
was a precision fit, matching any swales in the wall
perfectly. Special thanks to Jeff and Julie Hoffman, Adam
Edwards, Derek Pfannenstein, Pat Thompson and Andy McKinley
for their outstanding contribution to this project. Absolutely
beautiful work gang!
If your family or your business is ever in need of custom
countertops, the great folks at Hoffman's are the people to
call for a professional install and a quality finish. Give
them a call at 952-469-6616 for the best in quality

DAY 48: APPLIANCES DELIVERED
Warners'
Stellian
Keeps It Cold For
Baseball

Warners'
Stellian was one of the first to donate to the project when it
began.
One of the first
donations made to the boosters ended up being one of the last
to be installed, as the appliances were finally delivered to
the new baseball facility. Jeffrey Warner of Warners' Stellian
was one of the first to buy into the project early on with a
big heart for helping a worthwhile community endeavor.
Warners' Stellian donated three major appliances to the new
facility back in 2006, however setbacks in the project kept
the facility from becoming a reality until ground was broken
on April 29th, 2009.
Warners' Stellian
went above and beyond the call of duty by actually donating
some larger appliances than expected. The facility will have
separate refrigerators, the
larger refrigerator is for beverages and the smaller
refrigerator is strictly for food product. The chest freezer
is for storage of perishable items.
The alumni Cougar
Baseball Boosters thank Mr. Warner and all the great people at
Warners' Stellian. Their support means everything to our
school and our baseball program.
If you should ever
need new kitchen appliances for your home, the place to go is
Warners' Stellian in Apple Valley. Please consider giving them
your support as a show of thanks for their help in supporting
our children and our community. Call them at 952-891-4700. Thank you again
Warners' Stellian!

DAY 47: LOWER WINDOW RAIN-GUARDS
INSTALLED
Pro Fab
Builds Extra Rain Protection For Lower Flip Up Windows
As a precaution against a hard driving rain, the folks at Pro
Fab have designed a simple rain-guard for over the top of each
lower flip-up window, to keep rain water from getting behind
the window seal. The new rain-guards are made of sturdy
aluminum and were powder-coated with a white finish to match
the trim. The folks at Pro Fab also manufactured a special
prop-up tool for help in opening the metal flip-up windows.
Many thanks to Ben Stuber and Randy Slagel at Pro Fab for all
the great work. Much appreciated guys.

DAY 33: WALL AND CEILING
INSULATION INSTALLED
Emond
Insulation Teams With Northstar Wholesale Insulation
The alumni baseball boosters were
elated to receive the help of both Emond Insulation and also
North Star Wholesale Insulation. Mark Emond was happy to
donate the labor force as well as coordinate the insulation
donation. A crackerjack work force consisting of Pat and Sam
Emonds, both coincidentally South students, completed the
interior insulation and vapor barrier in record time,
graciously donating their labor on a free Saturday morning.
This should hopefully earn both students some high marks with
the school. Thanks guys for the very professional
installation.
If
you're ever in need of insulation and professional
installation, call Mark Emond 469-5688, Emund Insulation and
North Star insulation.

COMPLETED
Floor Joists
Are Insulated Between First And Second Floors
Another hurdle was covered on
this Saturday afternoon of work as the city required Thermax
insulation board was cut and installed along the perimeter of
the first floor ceiling and second floor joists. This helps to
reduce condensation, while keeping the exterior temps
separated from the interior. Special thanks to alumni booster
Pat Daniels for his help and advice regarding the proper
installation.

DAY 31: AUDIO SYSTEM AND SPEAKERS
INSTALLED
Facility
Receives Sound System And Exterior Speakers
Today was the day that the sound
system and speakers were installed and tested. Using outdoor
speakers donated from the Lakeville Best Buy, the facility now
has a working sound system to announce games and play music
with. A SoundTech powered mixer with 150-watts per channel
gives the facility a significant upgrade over the previous
sound system. With two speakers mounted under the east and
west soffits, the sound system not only delivers to the home
and visitor sections, but carries nicely onto the field as
well. Thanks to alumni Cougar Eric Watts for his help in the
installation and testing of the new sound system.

DAY 30: EXTERIOR PAINTING IS
COMPLETE
Booster Help
Finishes
Siding Paint
Job
The exterior painting was
completed after purchasing a fifth gallon of paint. With the
painter now on vacation and his stairway ladder extension
gone, it was time to improvise in order to reach the upper
wall. Using an extension ladder and scaffolding from Tekton, a
remedy was found. While a little shaky and tough to balance
on, it worked well enough to complete the painting. The
exterior work was finally finished. Time to work on the
interior.

A precarious perch to finish the upper east
side wall.

The exterior is finally done. A look at the
west and south sides.
DAY 29: BUILDING FINALLY GETS
PAINT JOB
House Call
Painting Gives Facility A Quality Exterior Finish
The exterior painting finally began as
John Pieri from Housecall Painting donated his time and skill in putting a finish on the building
exterior. The boosters provided some additional painting help,
along with some very expensive and durable
paint. John provided his expertise and his sprayer to get the
project done. He did a magnificent job. Unfortunately, the four gallons
from the boosters only made it through
3 1/2 sides, leaving the upper wall over the east side
stairway to finish the following day, when more paint could be
bought. Thanks John for the outstanding work!
If you
are in need of professional painting services, please do not
hesitate to call John Pieri and Housecall Painters at
898-3800.

John Pieri gets started on the north side of
the building.

Housecall painting comes
to the rescue.
DAY 28: METAL FLIP-UP WINDOWS ARE
INSTALLED
First Floor
Metal Windows Offer Shade As Well As A Security Asset
The long awaited lower floor
window coverings finally arrived as Pro-Fab delivered three
beautiful custom made metal flip-up windows. Co-owner Ben
Stuber and assistant Nate Wall did a remarkable job with the
new coverings, which offer an awning when open, providing a
sun shade and protection from rain , but also a valuable
security asset when closed. Stuber earlier stated that if he
was given some time, he would really deliver on the window
closures, and he certainly did. With the windows coverings in
place, work can now begin on the interior.
If you
ever need custom metal fabrication work, call Ben Stuber and
the great folks at Pro-Fab 469-8988.

Bent Stuber and Nate Wall install the flip-up
window coverings.

The west and south sides of the building.

The east and south sides of the building.
DAY 27: WHITE TRIM GETS PAINTED
Doors And
Windows Get White Accent Trim
Work has begun on the exterior
painting, with the window and door trim beginning first. Using
a durable white latex, the doors and windows were triple
coated with a nice accent trim. The trim was done before the
full siding to accommodate the installation of the lower
window coverings. Once the exterior is finished the window
trim can be touched up to cover any spray over. Special thanks
to Shannon Watts for her help in getting the trim painted.

Painting of the press box window trim begins.

The south and east side of the building.
DAY 26: CHALKING OF BUILDING IS
FINISHED
Siding,
Windows And Doors Are Weather Sealed
A second day of chalking
completed the exterior work needed to to finish before
painting. All siding gaps were sealed, as well as any gaps
around the doors and windows. The exterior is now ready to
paint.

The chalking of siding, doors and windows is
completed as Eric Watts looks on.
DAY 25: HURRICANE CLIPS INSTALLED,
CHALK BEGUN
Roof Trusses
Are Tied To Building With Hurricane Clips
Another day of work saw the
completion of necessary interior hardware as the hurricane
clips were added to tie down the truss rafters to the top sill
plate. Eric Watts volunteered his afternoon to secure each
truss in order to meet the city and state code.

Eric Watts hammers away as he installs the
hurricane clips to meet code.
Work also began on the exterior
chalking, sealing up the gaps between the siding and any
cracks around the windows and doors.
DAY 24: PRESS BOX STAIRS
COMPLETED
Stahl &
Tekton Finish Major Exterior Work

The building exterior after day 24 work
completed.
Tuesday saw the finish of the
major exterior work by Stahl and Tekton. Dave Wosika went solo
for the day, finishing as much as he could in the sweltering
92 degree heat to end the exterior work from Stahl and Tekton.
Dave was able to finish the upper deck supports, the press box
stairs and door flashing. Special thanks to Dave for all of
his exhausting efforts in getting this work done, especially
in the heat.

Dave Wosika works on step treads and risers for
the press box stairway.
The alumni-boosters will use
parent volunteers to complete the unfinished stair railings,
and exterior chalking. Once those tasks are out of the way,
the painting of the building can be started. The
alumni-boosters will also add the interior hurricane clips to
the truss rafters in order to meet the city requirements for
the final interior framing inspection. After the city signs
off on the framing, the interior insulation work can be
completed in preparation for hanging of the dry-wall.

Dave Wosika works on flashing under the press
box door.
DAY 23: SIDING AND SOFFIT
COMPLETED
Siding
Completed;
Press Box
Stairs Underway
On Monday the team of Dave Wosika
and Jim Kaczmarczyk worked on completing the east soffit and
siding. On a hot day that saw the temperature hit 91, the two
Tekton carpenters began laying out the stair stringers for the
steps leading to the press box. The stairway treads and risers
were half complete by the end of the work day, leaving
completion of the steps for the following day.

Dave Wosika and Jim Kaczmarczyk do exterior
finish work on the building.

Lakeville Life & Times
Businesses team up, build new press box at Lakeville South
Despite tough economy, contractors step to
the plate
by Laura Adelmann
ThisWeek Newspapers
Despite a difficult economy, several businesses
have stepped to the plate to help Lakeville South baseball
with a project designed to keep players on the field well into
the future.
(Read
full story here)
THANKS TO BASEBALL BOOSTER SUPPORTERS
Project Could Not Have Materialized Without The Generosity of
Many
This
project started as a direct result of Cougar baseball families
who supported the Cougar Baseball Boosters for the last few
years of fundraising. Without their patronage at baseball
booster events, this project could have never begun. We thank
you for your long support of Cougar Baseball Booster events.
The money the boosters were able to raise gave them the
initial start-up capital, but it still wasn't enough to build
the wonderful facility that will be finished. It was through
the generosity of corporate material donations, many actually
from outside the community, that this project became a
reality. We thank all of our valued donators for their most
generous donations.
The final piece to the press box project
came into place with the tremendous labor involvement that was
offered to the boosters. A breakfast meeting with Scott Everson from
Stahl Construction was the catalyst that spring-boarded
the project into gear. The Stahl Corporate Giving Committee
was then approached by Mr. Everson, whereupon the group felt
the project to be a worthy cause
that they could contribute to, helping out a local community where
they have
been involved for so many years. Stahl is responsible for a
large number of very successful construction projects in the city, including the new
Lakeville police station, as well as many of the fine schools,
including our own Lakeville South high school. The baseball boosters thank
Wayne Stahl, Scott Everson, Josh Gangestad, Clark Evans and Brenda Studt, as
well as the entire staff at Stahl Construction for taking on
this much needed project, one which will serve as a necessary
field amenity, but also as an invaluable revenue mechanism for
South baseball for many
years to come. The concession stand / press box project is
apparently one of the larger community giving projects ever taken on by
this group. The baseball boosters, the school and ISD 194
sincerely appreciate the magnanimous effort put forth and the
invaluable support from the folks at Stahl Construction. The families of South High School and
the people of Lakeville can be proud to have such a generous group that is willing to give back
so much to a community. We cannot even begin to express the depth of our gratitude to this
outstanding company and good hearted group of people.
Tekton Construction Services, a division of Stahl
Construction, provided the skilled labor force of carpenters to
build the new facility. Their building expertise is directly
responsible for the solid structure we now have. Very special
thanks to Steve Mayfield and Tekton carpenters Dave Wosika, Joe Kelly, Mike
Culbertson, Paul Botko, Jim Spicer, John Clare,
Dave Goetzke, Perry Andrews, Craig Kasa
and Jamie Graff for their extensive
labor in erecting the new structure. Great job guys!
Pro-Build became another integral piece to the
project. Manager Mike Bensen originally accepted the project and was
willing to donate the expensive roof, but eventually was
transferred before the project could begin. New manager Dan
Lieser stepped in and was kind enough to not only continue that commitment,
but upped the ante by helping with the building materials after Cemstone pulled out of the
project. Mr. Lieser coordinated all the materials and their
timely delivery during the project. This was a tremendous gesture on the part of Mr. Lieser, one which literally saved the project and for which the boosters are
very much grateful for. Thanks to boom-truck drivers Aaron
Zweber and Dan Borck
for their assistance in getting materials to the site. Thanks also to Pro-Build architect
Nicole Danzl from the Zimmerman office for her fine work in
formalizing the booster design in blueprint form. Thank you
all at Pro-Build.
Anchor Block became another highly valued contributor as
they stepped in to offer the free concrete foundation blocks for
the project, along with a generous donation of 40 bags of pre-mixed mortar. Every
project starts from the bottom up and Anchor Block provided
the solid foundation for which the boosters were able to build
upon. The boosters sincerely appreciate the good folks at
Anchor block for stepping in to the rescue with the much
needed block and mortar. We thank Sandy Stoffel, Kevin Hegyi,
Mark Severson
and the management at Anchor Block for their
valuable gift which became the solid base for this project.
Every foundation also has a start and in this case it meant
the much needed trenching and excavating of the project in
order to begin. John Friedges of Friedges Landscaping &
Excavating was a big help in getting the project
moving as quickly as it did by literally agreeing on one days
notice to start the excavation sooner than expected to meet
the masons busy schedule. Mr. Friedges graciously agreed to provide the free labor in
getting the site prepared, actually doing the excavation
himself on a rainy day. We thank John Friedges for his efforts, as well as Dale Green from sister
company South Metro Rental, which provided the heavy
equipment for the project. Great work from Friedges
Landscaping & Excavation and South Metro Rental!
Once the trenching was completed, footings were needed to
build the foundation upon. Apple Valley Ready-Mix
stepped in at the last minute with a tremendous gesture to replace the concrete lost
from competitor Cemstone, donating the much needed concrete for
the footings as well as the slab flooring for the facility. The boosters wish to thank AVR president Peter
Fischer for very kindly stepping in at the last minute and his
invaluable offer of free concrete for the interior portion of
the project. The
boosters appreciate Mr. Fischer's outstanding support. Thanks
also to Pete's fabulous delivery crew of Paul Bredehoft and
Brian Runpza of Apple Valley Ready-Mix (AVR). Thanks very much
guys for the great donation for the interior portion of the
new structure.
One of the largest problems that held the project up for
many months was finding a mason crew to handle the skilled
level of craftsmanship to pour the
concrete footings, lay the foundation block, pour the slab flooring and
deal with the sidewalks. It took a real
baseball supporter by the name of Terry Fredrickson from
Viking Concrete & Masonry of Elko to step in and offer his
services to help the boosters out, actually working on his
weekend off just to get the project started. Terry has already
put in many hours on the project. A super effort and most
professional job well done, The boosters thank Terry & Brad
Fredrickson, Matt Lyrenmann, Luther Schmidt, John Ricci, and
Doug Swedin for their contribution to the project.
Another need for the new facility was a sidewalk to
surround the building, filling in where the asphalt was cut
out and finishing the exterior ground surface off.
Aggregate Industries did their part to help by donating
the concrete for the sidewalk. A lot of cement was needed for
this project so the extra help from Aggregate Industries made
the sizable concrete donation much easier to handle for the
two companies helping with the much needed cement. They were
able to help the masonry company out with a continual sidewalk
pour so that the job could be finished on schedule. The
boosters wish to thank Don Vry and Tom Ryan from the Eagan
office of Aggregate Industries, where they handle ready-mix,
concrete and quality aggregates. Thanks also to driver Brad
Gust for the timely delivery. Thanks very much guys for
helping to keep the project on schedule so the masons could
finish with a one day pour. Much appreciated.
While the project had many setbacks, one major obstacle was
the fact that the major electrical trunk for the South varsity
field just happened to run through the project site,
potentially forcing the boosters to seek yet another location.
Manger Bret Young of
ColliSys Electrical Systems came to the rescue by sending
Keith Habeck, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, to help
reroute the high power, pulling the transformer from the dugout
wall and putting it on the new concession stand, thus saving
the location for the project. Mr. Habeck also has worked on
his weekends off in order to get this project going as quickly
as possible. Habeck has recently been joined by another superb
ColliSys wiring wiz, Scott Smith, in helping to finish up the
needed electrical for the facility. These two have been a
solid one-two punch in knocking this out as quickly as
possible. The boosters wish to thank them both, as well as Mr.
Bret Young of ColliSys for donating countless hours and costly
materials to the facility. We appreciate Mr. Young for sending
his A-team.
Another valuable asset to the project came from Pro-Fab
Welding & Machine who agreed to make custom metal flip-up
windows, much like the previous concession wagons used by the
boosters. Not only would the flip-up windows provide an
overhead awning for shade and rain protection, but more
importantly they would provide secure protection against
possible vandalism or break-ins, as opposed to using glass
windows. The boosters thank Ben Stuber amd Randy Slagel for
their valuable
expertise in the custom design and manufacture of the much needed
first floor concession stand windows.
This project did however need actual glass windows for the
second-story press box facility. The boosters were fortunate
enough to make the acquaintance of Jim and Rhonda Steffes from
New Windows For America-Minnesota. This Shoreview company
graciously agreed to provide the boosters the beautiful second
floor press box windows for which we are extremely thankful
for. This husband and wife team were also two very nice people
to meet and deal with. We cannot thank them enough for being
involved in a project outside of their own community, although
they do offer the same quality windows to Lakeville homeowners
should you ever be in the market for residential windows.
Thank you Jim and Rhonda for the quality press box windows from
New Windows
For America - Minnesota.
Another need for the project was cabinetry for the
concession stand. Local company Designed Cabinets was happy to
offer their beautiful quality finished cabinets and professional services in
providing the facility with some much needed storage.
Thanks to owner Jeff Barum for
this much appreciated offering of the cabinetry and storage. Mr. Barum has been given the
leeway to furnish the space as best as possible per the
design. Thanks also to former financial comptroller Adam
VanGrinsven for bringing the project to the attention of
Designed Cabinets and getting the process started. The boosters thank
Mr. Barum and Designed Cabinets for their professional expertise and
wonderful donation.
These quality cabinets will be a great addition to the new
facility.
You certainly can't have cabinets without countertops so
the good folks at Hoffman's Countertops and Cabinets
have joined in the effort to outfit the facility with
countertops for not only the lower concession stand, but also
the upper press box as well. This donation from the folks at
Hoffman's is greatly appreciated and will help in meeting the
state health code for a non-porous countertop surface. We
thank Jeff Hoffman for being so kind to help on the project
and look forward to the professional custom built countertops
for the new concession stand / press box. The boosters thank
Mr. Hoffman and all the good folks at Hoffman's Countertops
and Cabinets for their valued support.
Once the building is completed it needs specific amenities
and appliances to become functional. A solid supporter from
the very start, Jeffrey Warner, CEO and President of Warners'
Stellian, made a magnificent donation of much needed
appliances to fill the inside with. Mr. Warner was kind enough
to donate a large refrigerator for soft drinks, another
refrigerator for food items and a small chest freezer for
storage of perishables. The boosters are elated with the
support from Warners' Stellian and wish to sincerely thank
them and Mr. Warner very much for their much appreciated
contribution.
When it comes to the second floor press box, the boosters
realized they needed a nice flooring surface to cover the
particle board floor. Hertaus Floors of Lakeville
didn't have to think twice when asked if they would be
interested in helping out for the project. They said yes
immediately to provide a flooring surface for the second-story
press box area. The Cougar Baseball Boosters are thrilled to
have the folks at Hertaus Floors provide their expertise in
covering the press box area with a beautiful new floor
surface. Thanks to Bill and Ron Hertaus for their nice gift
and for their support of the concession stand and press box
project. Thanks very much guys!
One of the last pieces to the puzzle is the final trim
molding and MJ Trimming, Inc has agreed to put the
finishing touches on the trim work for the project. Owner Mark
Johnson has over twenty years of experience doing finish trim
work. He has agreed to donate his time and efforts to helping
finish the interior and exterior finishing aspects of the
project. Mark also finished the stair railings as well as the
lower concession door railing and door stop. The boosters
thank Mark and the crew at MJ Trimming Inc for their expertise
and their much valued support.
The good folks at the new Lakeville Best Buy have also
helped out with a donation of outdoor speakers which
will attach to the press box, as well as a new PA system for the press box facility.
The new Lakeville Best Buy, located near I-35 and 185th street
in the Timbercrest shopping center, continues to be a proud
supporter of Cougar Baseball. Their contribution is greatly
appreciated and certainly helps in the press box and also with
music entertainment in-between innings. Special thanks to GM
Alex Bartlett and also to Deborah McNulty from the Lakeville
Best Buy for helping with the
much needed new sound system.
The commercial locks for the concession stand and press box
doors weren't cheap, but Ryan Hauser of the downtown Ace
Hardware came to the rescue with the much needed Sclage
door knobs and deadbolts. Ryan was also good enough to help
with installation of the locks when we had problems. Now
that's great service! Thanks to Ryan and the downtown Ace
Hardware store for all of their help and support. Stop in and
see them in their brand new store on main street in downtown
Lakeville.
A most special component for the new baseball facility will
be a beautiful new booster-designed sign that will adorn the
North upper face of the press box. It will be visible to all
who come to the field, as well as those traveling on 210th
street. The sign commemorates the establishment of South
Cougar Baseball in 2006. Dan Gust of ActionPlus Signs in Apple
Valley really came through with a beautiful sign. He was able
to take the booster artwork and then vectorize it for a larger
image. The sign is a nice finishing touch to the facility and
the boosters cannot thank Mr. Gust and the folks from
ActionPlus Signs enough for this beautiful contribution.
A huge thank you also to the good folks from Elko
Baseball who very generously contributed $1,000 towards the
completion of the press box and concession stand project. Even
with the myriad list of magnificent business supporters, there
have still been sundry financial costs to to deal with in finishing
the project, including the city building permit, along with
other miscellaneous project expenses, one of which being a
very necessary field watering tap for the varsity field. The
Elko Baseball committee was approached for help and they
eagerly chipped in with the financial donation, made out to
Lakeville South high school. The boosters thank the
Fredrickson family and the entire Elko Baseball committee for
their generosity and wonderful support. Thank you Elko
Baseball very much!
This much needed facility has been in the making for some
time and the baseball boosters thank each and every one of
these great companies for helping out, especially in such a
bad economic downturn. These businesses have faithfully and
most kind heartedly stayed with the boosters throughout this
long process. We are deeply indebted. We cannot possibly say
thank you enough, but we would like to urge the families of
Cougar nation to show their support of these great companies in these tough times,
should they ever be in need of any such materials or services.
Thanks also to the City of Lakeville for helping to
make this process move forward as efficiently as possible.
Thanks to Gene Abbott and Brad Sticha for their involvement.
Posthumous thanks to Jay Rubash who was killed in a motorcycle
accident during the course of this project. Our sincerest
condolences to his family. Very special thanks to city
inspector Dave Peterson for stepping in and kindly helping out
with so many aspects of this project as it has come to
fruition. Thanks so very much.
A special thank you also to ISD 194 member Stan
Fredrickson for his wisdom and guidance throughout this
process. Stan is the king of all fields for the Lakeville
school district and we thank him for his passionate support.
Last but not least, thank you to the Cougar Baseball
Boosters, the greater portion being alumni members whose kids have long left the
school and baseball program, but still offered much help throughout the
course of this altruistic and benevolent endeavor. Thanks to
Joel Blaschko, Steve Clarke, Randy Sleeper, Jeff West, and especially Pat
Daniels for all of their tireless and much appreciated efforts.
You guys are the absolute best!
To everyone listed above...we literally couldn't have done this project without any of you.
Thank you all very much!

THANKS TO LOCAL FOOD & COFFEE MERCHANTS
Construction Crews Very Much Appreciate Donated Food
Many thanks to four outstanding Cougar
baseball supporters, Lakeville restaurants Green Mill,
the new Buffalo Wild Wings and the Kenwood Avenue Starbucks
Coffee. A special g'day mate to Burnsville's Outback
Steakhouse as well. With so many laborers donating their time and efforts it was nice to be able to treat the
crews over the weeks to some great food during the process. The
construction workers were
happy with the piping hot pizza from Green Mill Restaurant,
the savory taste of barbecue chicken from the new Buffalo Wild
Wings, as well as the half pound gourmet hamburgers from
Outback Steakhouse. The early morning hours were also easier to handle with
the great taste of Starbucks hot coffee.
Special thanks to Tim Kreiser of Green Mill
Restaurant, Ken Kooyer of Starbucks, Jerry Eck of the new
Buffalo Wild Wings and to Jamie Klug and Matt Sherrer from Outback Steakhouse
of Burnsville. These gentlemen and their great companies have
always been staunch supporters of Cougar baseball. It was a
very nice thing to do from some big hearted area businesses.
Please show your support for them whenever at all possible.
Thank you very much guys!

DICK'S SANITATION HELPS CLEAN UP
WORKSITE
Company Chips In With Dumpster To Help With Materials Clean-Up
The great folks at Dick's Sanitation came to the rescue
with the use of a roll-off dumpster on Wednesday to help clean
up the worksite debris. With a pile of existing asphalt that
needed to be removed, Dick's was literally on the spot within
minutes to help with the debris removal. Thanks to Troy
Nielsen and driver Jim Creighton for the efficient and very
speedy service!

DAY 22: SIDING AND SOFFIT WORK
NEARLY DONE
North Siding
Complete; Soffits 99% Complete
Friday saw the completion of the
north wall siding and soffit work. The team of Dave Wosika and
Jamie Graff worked diligently on the remaining siding and
leftover soffit work, along with some chalking of seams and
corners. Tekton supervisor Steve Mayfield also stopped by to
help lay out the rise and run for the stair stringers. The
team has about 15 minutes work left on the east soffit and
siding, so the remaining exterior work to be done will be the
stairs to the new press box and chalking of the building.

DAY 21: MORE SIDING TO FINISH ON
PRESS BOX
South And
West Siding Is Completed, Upper North Half Is Only Side Left
The siding work continued on
Friday as a small Tekton crew of Dave Wosika and
Jamie Graff finished off trimming out the press box windows and
worked more on the siding. The south side was completed as
well as the west side. All that is left is the upper north side
of the building. Once the siding is done, the gaps and outer
windows will be chalked in preparation for paint. Left to
complete after that is the north and east soffits and
the press box stairs. The lower custom flip-up windows will be
installed soon and then the interior work will begin. Once the
sheetrock is completed, the cabinetry, countertops and
flooring will be installed.

Jamie Graff and Dave Wosika work on the west side.

DAY 20: SIDING WORK CONTINUES
Work Nears
Completion On New South Press Box
Work continues on the South press
box as the cement siding goes up. Stahl Construction and
Tekton workers put in another day of work as the project
progresses.

Stahl and Tekton employees Mark Ramsland, Dale
Sonnichsen and Joe Kelly.
The siding on the east side is up
to the soffit while the south side is up to the press box
windows. The west and north sides should go much quicker now
since the siding is past the windows and there are no more
cutouts to deal with.

(L-R) Leroy Wagner, Mark Ramsland, Dale
Sonnichsen and Joe Kelly.
Thanks to Stahl Construction
supervisors Leroy Wagner and Mark Ramsland, project manager
Dale Sonnichsen and Tekton carpenter Joe Kelly for their
assistance. The baseball boosters are extremely thankful and
forever indebted to these wonderful benefactors for their
generosity and professional expertise.

The east and south siding is close to complete.

DAY 19: CONCRETE SIDEWALK IS
FINALLY FINISHED
Viking
Concrete & Masonry And Aggregate Industries Team Up For Pour

Matt Lyrenmann and Doug Swedin finish sidewalk
prep before the pour.
Wednesday finally became concrete
day, but after putting it off on Tuesday due to the threat of
rain (which never came), you just had to know it was going to
rain on Wednesday. It did. Just like washing and waxing your
car. It seems like it always rains when you don't want it to.
The guys at Viking Concrete & Masonry teamed up with the good
folks from Aggregate Industries and the sidewalk pour was on.
Terry Fredrickson, Doug Swedin and Matt Lyrenmann finished
prepping the surrounding sidewalk area and awaited the very
punctual 9:00 delivery of the concrete truck from Aggregate
Industries Ready-Mix, Concrete & Quality Aggregates.

Terry Fredrickson, Matt Lyrenmann and Doug
Swedin work the concrete.

Aggregate Industries comes in for the one day
pour to finish the sidewalks.
Within a two hour period the
sidewalks were done, but early in the afternoon the rain
started to come. Terry Fredrickson was on the spot quickly
with plastic sheeting and the freshly poured sidewalks were
safe from any water damage. Most of the fresh concrete had
already set up enough by that time so the danger was only from
the long drop of overhead dripping from the roofline.

Terry Fredrickson inspects as Doug Swedin and
Matt Lyrenmann finish.
The tarp was removed on Thursday
and the sidewalks looked great. Thanks to Viking Concrete &
Masonry and the folks at Aggregate Industries for getting the
job done in one day's time.
Special thanks to Don Vry and Tom
Ryan from the Eagan office for arranging the donation so
quickly and thanks to driver Brad Gust for the timely
delivery. The Tekton crew will be able to roll their heavy
scaffolding around the building easily now and finish the
exterior siding and soffit work without dragging the awkward
scaffolding through piles of cumbersome sand. Work will
continue on Saturday.

Finished sidewalks now surround the new
structure.

DAY 18: ASPHALT CUT AND SIDEWALK
IS PREPPED
Viking
Concrete & Masonry Is Back To Do Sidewalk Prep
The Tuesday concrete pour was put
off a day with the chance of rain in the forecast, but that
didn't stop Terry Fredrickson from cutting the asphalt away
and preparing the area around the concession stand / press box
for the new sidewalk. Fredrickson worked the day getting ready
for hopefully better weather conditions and a Wednesday pour
from Aggregate Industries. A new sidewalk will surround the
structure to help complete yet one more phase of the exterior
portion of the project. Thanks to Terry and Viking Concrete &
Masonry of Elko for getting the job done. Thanks also to Dale
Green of South Metro Rental for kindly lending the asphalt
blade to cut the surface with. Very much appreciated guys!

DAY 17: PRESS BOX LANDING ERECTED
Press Box
Landing Is Built To Prep For Concrete Sidewalk Pour
Memorial Day was supposed to be a
day off, but workers gamely volunteered to help get the site
ready for a possible Tuesday concrete pour, by erecting the
press box floor landing needed to be set in the lower
sidewalk. Stahl employee Dave Wosika and Cougar Baseball
Booster member Steve Clarke pitched in to help get the site
ready by working on the holiday. The press box landing was
completed and some interior header work was finished to mark
the 17th day of work on the project. Concrete will be poured
on Tuesday or Wednesday, weather permitting. Thanks to Dave
and Steve for taking one for the team on a day they could have
been kicking back and enjoying the day off. Great effort guys!

DAY 15: ELECTRICAL COMPLETE,
ROOFING
BEGINS
City Does
Rough-In Inspection And Electrical Inspection On Monday
The weather was much more
cooperative on Monday as Keith Habeck of ColliSys Electrical
wrapped up the interior wiring and was able to pass through
the city wiring inspection phase. Habeck also installed a high
sodium stair lamp with daylight sensor and also completed
wiring for the motion detector security lights. ColliSys is
now done until the interior sheet rock is in.

(L-R) Keith Habeck of ColliSys, and John
Clare and Dave Wosika of Tekton.
Meanwhile, a Tekton crew of Dave
Wosika and John Clare put in work on the roof, completing the
roof paper, edging and most of the shingles. Tekton has been
the lead labor force, hard at work completing the structure,
handling the costly union labor for the project.

The end of day 15 and the roofing and shingles
are finally in place.
The Cougars held a small
appreciation day ceremony prior to their final home game,
thanking those who generously donated to the project.

DAY 14: BUILDING WRAPPED, SIDING
BEGINS
Weather Holds
Back Expected Progress, But Much Still Accomplished
Stahl Construction and sister
company Tekton Construction combined forces on Saturday for a
big hearted volunteer effort to get some extra work in for the
South baseball concession stand and press box project. Field
superintendent Josh Gangestad was on hand, as well as John
Clare, Dave Goetzke, Mike Culbertson, Perry Andrews and Craig
Kasa, all pitching in on their own time. Project manager Clark
Evans also made a midday visit to check on the project's
progress.

John Clare, Josh Gangestad, Perry Andrews, Mike
Culbertson and Craig Kasa.
The weather was not the most
cooperative for the day. With a start time temperature of just
37 and morning overcast skies, conditions were much harsher
than expected. An added 30 mph wind put morning wind chill
temperatures in the upper 20s, making the wrapping of the
building a much more laborious job than normal.

Perry Andrews and Craig Kasa.
The building corners and window
trim were added and siding of the structure has officially
begun. Work will continue this week.

Thank you to the crews from Stahl
Construction and sister company Tekton Construction for
volunteering their time and efforts and for giving up their
Saturday off. Time and labor costs have become larger than
expected, all of which Stahl and Tekton have paid out of
their own pockets, so the Saturday volunteer time was
greatly appreciated by all involved.

One Extra Day Prior To Saturday Push

Tekton dynamic duo of Paul Botko and Dave
Wosika.
Tekton Construction was back
on Friday to put in some extra work in preparation for a big
Saturday push from an all volunteer company crew. The dynamic
tag team duo of Paul Botko and Dave Wosika were back on the
job finishing the truss rafters and closing the roof. Manager
Steve Mayfield was also on site to check the progress of the
project and assess Saturday's work load.

DAY 12: PRO-FAB TO DESIGN CUSTOM
WINDOWS
Lakeville
Metal Fabrication Company To Provide Concession Windows
Pro-Fab Welding & Machine
stopped by the site to assess the structure and materials
needed to create the custom designed flip-up metal windows.
Owner Ben Stuber measured the window openings in anticipation
of creation of the custom designed flip-up windows to be
featured in the first floor concession stand.
The new facility will utilize
metal flip-up windows, very much like those used in the
previous Pepsi and Coke concession wagons that the boosters
have used in the past. The windows will act as an overhead
awning when open to provide shade and also to protect patrons
from the rain. They will also provide much more security than
standard glass windows. The new custom designed windows will
be the last exterior component added to the new concession
stand and press box facility.

DAY 11: COLLISYS WIRES INTERIOR
OF BUILDING
ColliSys Gets
interior wiring Ready For New Building
ColliSys (Collins Electrical
Systems) had the building all to themselves today as they
prepared the interior wiring for the new first floor
concession stand. Once the wiring is done the insulation and
sheet rock will go up, after the city inspects the wiring and
the framing of the project.

The first floor concession stand gets wired for
juice.
The second floor wiring would
have been completed today, but with no roof to escape the
heavy afternoon rain that came, the electrical crew had to
call it a day early. They will resume the remaining electrical
work on Monday.

Keith Habeck and Scott Smith prepare the lower
half for the electrical.
Cougar baseball thanks Bret
Young and the management crew at ColliSys for their excellent
and generous help on the project and for sending in their
superb crew of Habeck and Smith.
DAY 10: POWER BACK ON, PRESS BOX
ENCLOSED
ColliSys
Reroutes Main Power; Tekton Closes In 2nd Story Press Box
A major hurdle was surpassed
on Tuesday when ColliSys electricians were able to finally
reroute the main transformer and attach it to the new
concession stand building, restoring power to the varsity
baseball field. Keith Habeck and Scott Smith worked
double-duty to get power back on in time for the varsity game
at 4:15. They were successful in meeting their deadline as
power was restored a full hour before game time. Great work
from two outstanding electricians. Way to go Keith and Scott!

Another dynamic duo also had a
great day of success as Stahl sister company Tekton had Paul
Botko and Dave Wosika work on completing the second floor
press box. These two showed why they are both highly regarded
and skilled carpenters with an outstanding day on the job. Not
only did they finish framing and enclosing the second floor
press box, but they also were able to set the truss rafters in
place for the roof structure. What a huge day Paul and Dave!
Excellent work from two great guys.

Work on the structure will now
be completed on Saturday as Stahl and Tekton will send in a
larger crew to finish the entire project in one day, just in
time for the donators' recognition and appreciation day to be
held prior to Monday's last home varsity game. A small
ceremony will be held before the South versus Bloomington
Kennedy game. Please come out to say thanks for the
outstanding contribution from these fine companies.

It was a day for concrete work as Apple Valley Ready-Mix
came through once again with a contribution of fresh cement
for the concession stand floor. AVR driver Brian Runpza ran
the mixer while Viking Concrete & Masonry of Elko did a superb
job of managing the "mud." Special thanks to Pete Fischer at
AVR for the donation of the much needed concrete.
If you have any
concrete needs, please give Pete and the good folks at AVR a
call to show your appreciation for their great support for
Cougar baseball.

DAY 5: FOUNDATION HOLE IS BACKFILLED
Friedges
Backfills Surrounding Hole; Structure Is Now Ready To Build

John Friedges (Bobcat) and
John Tompkins backfill around foundation.
The final pieces
of the concession stand / press box foundation were completed
on Monday (5/4) as Friedges Excavating filled in the remaining
excavation and surrounding trenches for the block foundation.
Dave Peterson completed the city inspection and Friedges
quickly filled the remaining holes with the proper fill and
then topped with sand in preparation for the concrete
flooring.

Foundation is prepped and ready
for floor and building of wood structure.
With rain and thunderstorms
expected for Tuesday, a Wednesday start by Stahl Construction
for framing of the first and second floors will finally begin.
DAY 4: PRESS BOX
FOUNDATION SEALED
ColliSys and
Stahl Both Work On Sunday To Prep For Monday Backfill

Keith Habeck of ColliSys puts
finishing touches on electrical work.
LSHS and ISD 194 are most
fortunate to have such dedicated crews that actually work
weekends. Sunday was no exception for Stahl Construction and
ColliSys electrical systems. Josh Gangestad from Stahl prepped
the interior foundation walls with insulation, while Keith
Habeck from ColliSys finished off the remaining underground
electrical work, all in time for a Monday inspection and then
backfill from John Friedges of Friedges Excavation. Also
completed was the sealing of the exterior walls to help
waterproof the foundation.

The exterior walls have been
sealed for waterproofing of the foundation.
The alumni Cougar Baseball
Boosters are thrilled to have such a dedicated group involved
in helping to bring the dream of a revenue fulfilling
concession stand with second story press box to fruition for
the baseball program. Thanks very much to Keith and to Josh
for the outstanding extra effort on a Sunday. Cougar nation is
most certainly indebted for their generous donation of time
and labor.
If you or your company
should need
expert electrical work done for your home or commercial
business, please give Keith Habeck and the good folks at
ColliSys a call at 763-535-6000. (click on ad

DAY 3: FOUNDATION IS DONE
Crew Works On Saturday To Complete Foundation Ahead of
Schedule

Viking Concrete & Masonry of Elko
puts the final touches on the foundation.
Because of their extra weekend effort, the great crew from
Viking Concrete & Masonry came in on a Saturday morning and
finished off the foundation work for the new concession stand
/ press box ahead of schedule. The crew of Terry Fredrickson,
John Ricci, Doug Swedin and Matt Lyrenmann worked extra hard
to finish early so that framing of the new facility could
begin on Tuesday from Stahl Construction. The alumni baseball
boosters cannot say enough good things about the outstanding
quality, professional work and superb effort put forth from
Viking Concrete & Masonry of Elko. Thanks guys for a job well
done!

need concrete and masonry work done, call Terry
Fredrickson and Viking Concrete at 952-461-3257.

DAY 2: PRESS BOX FOUNDATION WORK
Footings Poured And Block Foundation Takes Shape For New
Building

Terry Fredrickson of Viking Concrete & Masonry working on foundation.
In a day that started at 5:30 for baseball
booster Randy Sleeper, the foundation work for the Cougar
baseball concession stand began to take shape. Sleeper and his
company, Heartland Builders, made the early morning run for
the donated block from Anchor Block in North St. Paul. It
actually took three trips total, but the crew was able to
deliver the much needed block and mortar in time for the
masons to begin work. Cougar thanks to Randy Sleeper for the
early morning work and numerous trips.
Back at the site, John Friedges came back for
a second day to help excavate footings for Terry Fredrickson
and the crew from Viking Concrete. The team was able to meet a
9:30 inspection deadline from the city. After that,
Fredrickson and crew were able to pour the footings with
donated concrete from Pete Fischer at AVR (Apple Valley Ready
Mix). It wasn't long before Fredrickson and his crew were
laying foundation block at a quick pace, while Keith Habeck
from ColliSys put in a second day of routing wires for the
project. Most of the foundation work was laid up, but not all
work could be finished before the end of the day. Both Habeck
and Fredrickson graciously agreed to come back and work on
their day off on a Saturday in order to get the foundation
work ready for framing of the upper floors by Stahl
Construction early next week. That is above and beyond the
call of duty and all parties should be commended for their
good nature and tireless effort in getting the project done
early.
While this is solely an alumni booster
project, not being handled by ISD 194 nor LSHS, both
Fredrickson and Habeck stayed late in order to do work not
on their schedule, all to get electricity for the South vs
Rosemount game, even though an already previous understanding
was made with the coach that he would more than likely be
without power for probably just one varsity game. Keith Habeck had
to unexpectedly stay late the first two days in order to do non-booster work
for the school, just so the team would not have to go without
electricity and a scoreboard. The next day, Terry Fredrickson
also stayed late and had to loan his own
company generator, even though one could have been pre-arranged
from the school. This was clearly above and beyond the job
description for both men and their companies, so a very special thanks to
both of these men for acquiescing to the unexpected and not
sanctioned, non-booster work. Those are two good people
that showed the real class and good hearts to meet the
un-required tasks placed on them at the end of their hard work
days. A very special Cougar thanks to both for being good
sports by doing non-booster work. Great job guys for going the
extra mile!
DAY 1: PRESS BOX FACILITY FINALLY UNDERWAY
After Almost Two Years,
Project Gets Underway On Thursday (4/30)

John Friedges and crew, along with ColliSys electrician Keith
Habeck (right).
It's been almost three years in the planning,
but the alumni Cougar Baseball Boosters are finally realizing
their long standing goal to provide the South baseball program
with a valuable revenue tool and needed field amenity at the
same time. After many setbacks, the boosters finally broke
ground on Thursday (4/30/09) with the beginning of excavation for
the concession stand and press box, performed by John Friedges
and crew. Working in a light rain, the crew from Friedges Excavating graciously gave of their equipment and own personal
time to donate their efforts for the good of Cougar baseball.
They are to be commended for their invaluable sacrifice and
the alumni boosters cannot thank them enough.
Also involved in the process was ColliSys
(Collins Electrical Systems) and Keith Habeck as they rerouted
the massive voltage lines that ran directly through the
excavation site. Due to a missed electrical line locate from a
metro utility locating service, the major electrical trunk
line was accidentally cut, making life much harder for Keith
Habeck and ColliSys who are also generously donating their
time and efforts for the good of Cougar baseball. Mr. Habeck
took the setback in good stride and has amiably worked through
the unnecessary extra work with a great attitude and
understanding demeanor. We thank Keith for his hard work in
the trenches. (Literally)

STAHL CONSTRUCTION SIGNS ON WITH BOOSTERS
Construction Company Will Supervise Concession Stand Project
After many
unfortunate delays in the Cougar Baseball Boosters' concession
stand project, the group is happy to formally announce the
latest partner in their efforts to build a revenue generating
tool for the baseball program. Stahl Construction has agreed
to sign on to help with the concession stand / press box
facility. Stahl is responsible for many large projects in the
city, including the new city hall and many of the schools in
town, including our own Lakeville South. The boosters are
elated to have the support of Stahl Construction. Thank
you guys!

CONCESSION STAND
STARTED WITH PROBLEMS
Major Obstacles Lay
In The Path of The Baseball Concession Project

Key: Red lines=concession stand,
white lines=surrounding sidewalks and patio.
The original baseball
concession stand plan put forth by the Cougar Baseball
Boosters hit a considerable roadblock early on. More
accurately, irrigation water lines in the surrounding
grass became an obstacle.
The concession
stand was proposed to be built on the north end of the
asphalt in the grass, between fields one and two, for
easier access to baseball, as well as future soccer
events. That plan was scrapped due to the ground
limitations. A new site was
sought, due to the deeply buried water irrigation lines.
Instead of a fall 2007 groundbreaking, the boosters had to
put off their plans, actually going back to the drawing
board for a new option that would fit their second site
option.
Three primary
locations were identified, as well as a fourth alternate
location. The first primary location and the alternate
location were eliminated early on, with sites two and three
still available. Of the two remaining, site number two was
the
most attractive for many reasons, one of which was that
the attraction of a press box which could be built on top.
See:
Concessions |
Press box |
NEW drawing
A press box was a
significant need for the varsity facility, so the boosters
explored the option of a two story facility to
take care of both needs with one project. A center
oriented concession stand behind the backstop would
feature open windows on three sides for more customer
service availability. It would also serve as a buffer
between the home crowd and the visitor crowd, keeping both
at a friendly distance. It was a good fit in the end.

The first and fourth options are
blocked by water irrigation lines (in red).
